Greville Ewan Janner, Baron Janner of Braunstone QC (born July 11, 1928 in Cardiff , † December 19, 2015 in London ) was a British Labor politician, lawyer and author. Since 1971 he was crown attorney . He was a member of the House of Commons from 1970 to 1997. He was also affiliated with a number of Jewish organizations, including the Board of Deputies of British Jews , which he chaired from 1978 to 1984.

Education and early employment

Janner was born to Jewish parents. He was the son of Barnett Janner , a chairman of the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland . He attended St. Paul's School, London , went to Canada during the war and was a student at Bishop's College School , Lennoxville , Québec . He later studied law. He was with Trinity Hall College in Cambridge . There he was President of the Cambridge Union Society in 1952 . He continued his studies in the United States at Harvard Law School , where he came by winning the Fulbright and Smith-Mundt Awards.

He became a barrister in 1954 and QC in 1971 .

Political career

Janner represented the constituencies of Leicester North West and later Leicester West in the House of Commons from 1970 to 1997 . His predecessor in this parliamentary seat was his father, Sir Barnett Janner . Patricia Hewitt was his successor .

He was raised to life peer as Baron Janner of Braunstone , of Leicester in the County of Leicestershire in 1997 . He was president of the bipartisan group against anti-Semitism and chairman of the bipartisan British-Israeli group of parliamentarians.

On October 13, 2014, he was granted a Leave of Absence and thus suspended from his membership in the House of Lords.

Civil society career

Janner was President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews , a major representative body of British Jewry , from 1978 to 1984 , and played a key role in advocating reparations for victims of the Holocaust . He was also Vice President of the World Jewish Congress and the Jewish Leadership Council .

He was the founder and president of the Commonwealth Jewish Council and Trust and chairman of the Holocaust Educational Trust .

Janner wrote several books on public speaking and business communication. He was a member of The Magic Circle and the International Brotherhood of Magicians .

During his career he has always advocated good relationships between the different faiths and religions. His book One Hand Alone Cannot Clap is the legacy of this work. He was with Prince Hassan of Jordan the founder of the Coexistence Trust , a foundation against anti-Semitism and Islamophobia .

He was married to Myra Louise (née Sheink) from 1955 until her death. The marriage had three children. His youngest daughter is an ordained rabbi . Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner was appointed national spokesperson for the Movement for Reform Judaism in Great Britain in 2011 . She is married to a brother of the Israeli writer Amos Oz .
