Grigor Sepouhi Chandschjan ( Armenian Գրիգոր Սեպուհի Խանջյան , Russian Григор Сепухович Ханджян Grigor Sepuchowitsch Chandschjan ; born November 29, 1926 in Yerevan ; † April 19, 2000 ibid) was an Armenian - Soviet painter and graphic artist .

Life

Chandschjan attended the Yerevan Art School with graduation in 1945. He then studied at the Yerevan Terlemesjan Art School with AW Bekarjan and Edouard Isabekjan with graduation in 1951. For his thesis he chose the 5th Congress of the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Russia in 1907 in London and did not paint Stalin as expected but the Armenian Bolshevik Stepan Shahumyan .

Chandschjan was a member of the Union of Artists of the Armenian SSR (ArmSSR) and was elected to its management in 1953. He became a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1962), a member of the executive board of the Union of Artists of the USSR (1963) and finally a full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1973). In 1975 he became a member of the Supreme Soviet of the ArmSSR and a member of the Presidium. In 1982 he became a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the ArmSSR .

Chandjyan was first known as a painter, with the history of Armenia eventually becoming his main subject. His illustrations of the novel Armenia's Wounds by Chatschatur Abovjan (1959) and the verse epic The Never Silencing Bell Tower by Paroujr Sewak (1968), which is dedicated to the genocide of the Armenians in 1915 and to the composer Komitas , attracted particular interest . In 1966 he became a member of the Supreme Council of the clergy Armenian Apostolic Church and friend of Catholicos Vazgen I. For the Catholicos-building he designed the tapestries battle of avarayr and The Armenian alphabet of Mesrop Mashtots of Armenian history (1981). Since these carpets were not available to the public, the First Party Secretary of the ArmSSR Karen Demirtschjan suggested that reproductions be put up as wall paintings on the new Yerevan sports and music arena. Instead, Chandschjan created the theater curtain Mother Armenia for the arena and the murals of the carpet pictures for the Yerevan Cascade (now the Cafesjian Museum of Art). With the third picture of the rebirth of Armenia , a triptych was created . By traveling to Italy , Spain and Mexico he got to know the cultures there, which influenced his works. With his work he wanted to revive traditional Armenian handicrafts and folk art.

In 2010, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave a speech in front of Chandschjan's triptych at the Cafesjian Art Museum. In 2016, the Central Bank of the Republic of Armenia issued a commemorative coin with Chandjan's carpet of the Battle of Avarayr.
