Edouard Isabekjan ( Armenian Էդուարդ Իսաբեկյան , Russian Эдуард Исабекян ; born November 8 . Jul / 21st November  1914 greg. In Iğdır in the province Yerevan ; † 17th August 2007 in Ashtarak ) was an Armenian - Soviet painter and graphic artist .

Life

Isabekjan's father Amajak Isabekjan was a trader and farmer. In 1918 the family left Iğdır, which was captured by Turkish units in the 1920 Turkish-Armenian War and has been part of Turkey since 1922 . After a two-month stay in Echmiadzin , the family settled in Yerevan . Isabekjan received his first artistic training from 1927–1931 at the Yerevan Geghard Technical Center with the painters Sedrak Arakeljan , Wahram Gaifedschjan and the graphic artist Gohar Fermanjan. He then worked as an artist for the newspapers Pionier Kantsch , Avantgarde , Soviet Armenia and designed their front pages. From 1935 to 1941 Isabekjan studied at the Tbilisi Art Academy, first graphics and then painting with Kote Gselishvili. His diploma thesis was the painting Uprising of the Batumier Workers 1903 . In 1941 he became a member of the Armenian Artists Union. He created scenic representations, portraits , landscapes , graphics and book illustrations . He represented important figures in Armenian history such as Davit Bek , Sayat Nova and Axel Bakunts . During the German-Soviet War he portrayed the heroic Soviet people and the liberation struggle of the Armenian people. In 1943 he served in the 89th Armenian Division of the Red Army .

In 1943 Isabekjan began to teach at the Terlemesjan Art Technical College in Yerevan. In 1945 Isabekjan moved to the Yerevan State Art Academy and taught there until 2000. He became particularly well known for the illustration of the historical story about the struggle of the Armenian rebels under the leadership of Vartan Mamikonians in the battle of Avarayr against the Sassanid overlords by Derenik Demirtschjan and the illustration of the stories about Mchitar Sparapet by Sero Chansadjan . Isabekjan dedicated drawings and graphics to the painter Arpenik Nalbandjan . In 1952 he was appointed lecturer in Moscow .

In 1952 Isabekjan joined the CPSU and in 1953 became a member of the Soviet Union in the city of Yerevan .

In 1965 Isabekjan took over a chair at the Abovyan Pedagogical Institute . In 1967 Isabekjan was appointed professor in Moscow and became director of the Armenian National Gallery in Yerevan (until 1987). He founded branches of the National Gallery in Echmiadzin (1970), Jermuk (1972), Hrasdan (1973), Vanadzor (1974), Gyumri (1978), Martuni (1978), Yeghegnadzor (1979), Jajur for Minas Avetissjan (1980) and Alawerdi (1987).

Isabekjan's works have been shown in solo exhibitions in Yerevan (1947, 1964, 1986 and on his 80th and 100th birthday), in Tbilisi (1965), Rabat (1983), Moscow in the Central House of Art (1988) and Aleppo (1992) . In addition, he was represented at many group exhibitions.

From 2005 Isabekjan lived and worked in Ashtarak , where he died. His grave is in Yerevan Komitas Park and Pantheon .

The Armenian National Gallery is showing works by Isabekjan in its own room. Further works can be found in museums and private collections. In 2013 the Isabekjan Museum was opened in Yerevan. The Armenian Central Bank issued a commemorative coin on the 100th birthday of Isabekjan.
