Grit Poppe (born January 25, 1964 in Boltenhagen , Grevesmühlen district ) is a German writer.

Life

Grit Poppe is the daughter of the physicist and civil rights activist Gerd Poppe from his first marriage. Since her father took up a job at the Stahnsdorf semiconductor plant near Potsdam after completing his studies , the family moved to where they grew up and, after their parents divorced in 1970, went to school. After an apprenticeship as a secretary, she worked at the DEFA studio for feature films and later at the Potsdam Film and Television Academy .

At the time of reunification she was involved in the citizens' movement Democracy Now (DJ) and was managing director of DJ (later Alliance 90 ) for the state of Brandenburg until 1992 .

Even as a student, Grit Poppe had the desire to become a writer. From 1984 to 1988 she studied at the "Johannes R. Becher" literature institute in Leipzig. In 1989 she made her debut with the short story book Der Fluch . She writes novels and stories for children, young people and adults and lives in Potsdam with her two children, a son and a daughter. The interplay between a realistic plot and fantasy elements characterizes most of her youth books so far. Above all, Alabusch or Das Herz des Vulkans (1999), Käpten Magic (2006) and Anderswelt (2009) should be mentioned here.

In 2010 she was awarded the Gustav Heinemann Peace Prize for books for children and young people for Weggesperr , her first purely realistic youth novel based on extensive research . It was selected as a full font for the secondary school final exam in Baden-Württemberg in 2011.
