Great Wall west of the Yellow River
The Great Wall west of the Yellow River ( 河西 長城 / 河西 长城 , Héxī chángchéng , English Hexi Great Wall ) is the wall along the Hexi or Gansu corridor , which was built in several phases during the time of the Western Han Dynasty under Emperor Wu . It used a system of alarm towers and fortified sites and played an important role in securing the east-west trade routes on the Silk Road . It forms part of the Great Wall of the Han Dynasty ( 汉 长城 , Han changcheng ).
The construction of the wall began in 121 BC. BC with the first section in the so-called Lingjusai ( 令 居 塞 ) on the west bank of the Yellow River in today's Yongdeng County ( Gansu Province ) and extended to Jinta County in the north of the city of Jiuquan ( 酒泉 ) along the Hexi Corridor , 111 BC . The construction of the second section to Yumenguan ( 玉门关 ) was ordered, 102 BC. The third section from Yumenguan to Lake Lop Nor ( 罗布泊 ) in Xinjiang .
