The lady beetle or the great pine jewel beetle ( Chalcophora mariana ) is a beetle from the family of jewel beetles and the subfamily Chrysochroinae .

description

The beetles grow to be 24 to 33 millimeters long. They are the largest jewel beetles in Central Europe . The top of the body is partly striped bronze-brown and silver. On the head, the pronotum and the elytra, there are broad, partly interconnected, gray-scale, silvery, shiny longitudinal furrows. The underside has a strong copper-red sheen. The pronotum is irregularly dotted and widest at the base. The wing covers are heavily sculpted and taper towards the end, which is drawn out to a fine point.

In contrast to the similar species Chalcophora intermedia , the upper lip has a shiny front edge set off by a bristle-bearing furrow (Fig. 1). In addition, the tooth-shaped extended seam tips of the wing covers protrude over the rear edge of the same, while in Chalcophora intermedia the wing covers are outlined next to the seam tips, so that the end of the wing covers lie behind the end teeth of the wing cover seam (Fig. 2).

The beetle differs from Chalcophora detrita by the wider and higher ribs on the elytra and by the metallic color.

Occurrence

The species prefers sandy, warm pine forests . It is very rare and occurs in the eastern part of Europe , the Caucasus , Siberia and North Africa . In the north, the distribution range extends to Denmark , central Sweden , southern Norway and southern Finland . The species is absent in the Netherlands and the British Isles .

Way of life

The beetle is airworthy and extremely shy. He likes to sunbathe on felled or dead pine trunks.

The larvae , which are up to 80 millimeters long, have a very narrow, elongated body that is very narrow and flattened in front. They develop in the wood of dead, decaying pines , especially in their stumps.

nutrition

The larvae feed on pine wood .

Hazard and protection

The ladybird has become rare in many areas and is on the red list in some federal states in Germany.

  • Red List Bavaria: 3 (endangered)
  • Saxony-Anhalt: 2 (endangered)

The causes of danger are:

  • large-scale habitat destruction
  • Use of biocides in forests, field trees, avenues and orchards
  • extensive felling of old wood
  • Afforestation of large stands of pure culture with fast-growing trees
  • Deforestation of woods, avenue trees, individual old oaks and old oak stocks
  • Afforestation with allochthonous wood species
