The Große Pinnower See (also Großer See ) near Murchin is not far from the district of Pinnow in Lassaner Winkel , about 15 kilometers northeast of Anklam , in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district . The closest town is Lassan , about 5 kilometers northwest of the lake.

The lake is around 1.3 kilometers long and around 690 meters wide. Its formation goes back to the last ice age and structurally it belongs to the dimictic waters (mixed twice a year) as an incision of the former ice edge position between Anklam and Wolgast . At times the lake had an above-ground drain into the Lasssaner Mühlgraben . Long years ago this drain was closed due to excessive water loss from the lake. A later recanalization attempt was canceled because the corresponding culvert under the road from Lentschow to Wangelkow could no longer be found.

In addition to the Großer See, there is another smaller body of water in the immediate vicinity, the Straßensee , which is located a little to the east near the Wangelkow district of the Buggenhagen community . A ditch connects the Großer Pinnower See with the Strasseensee. Numerous ponds and small lakes with no direct connection are in the wider area.

The lake is located in the Pinnower Forest and especially the north and east banks are reed and difficult to access. There is a school camp on the west bank of the lake and, since 1973, a holiday home area with individual private bathing spots on the northwest bank . Opposite there is a small public lido on the southwestern shore of the lake, which is currently without an operator.

There are no significant surface waters flowing into the lake. Since a drain was built in the 20th century, the water level has dropped significantly. After its closure, it rose again and reached a previous high after heavy rainfall in May 2013. The average water level is 10 m above sea level. NN .

After the Dementia lake with a depth of about 26 m and the 3 km northeast of Berlin with 16 m, the Great Pinnower Lake is the third deepest lake in Western Pomerania with 15.2 m. The water quality in the lake is of high quality. Measurements in 1997 showed high visibility depths of 4.8 m to 5.2 m.

Flora and fauna

Not far from the lake is the nature reserve Peenetalmoor , Europe's largest contiguous fen . Large parts of the western and southern bank areas in particular are part of this nature reserve and are protected as a biotope . Driving on the lake with motor boats is not permitted.

The large lake is very rich in fish and has stocks of eel , perch , pike , roach , rudd and vendace . Furthermore, many rare and protected animal and plant species are native to and in the lake. These include crayfish , grass snakes , various types of dragonflies, but also sea eagles and white storks as food guests in the immediate vicinity of the lake. The spawning habitat is a habitat for species such as common frogs and common toads .

The lake has been privately owned for several years.
