The Große Teich Torgau is a pond 1.5 to 2 m deep south of Torgau in the Free State of Saxony . The lake is used for fish farming , nature conservation , local recreation and flood protection . It was laid out as a fish pond by decree of the Electoral Saxony 1483/84 , possibly as early as 1478. The year 1457 is also mentioned.

The barrier structure is a dam , the dammed body of water is the Schwarze Graben / Weinske .

For the Torgau Fortress , the large pond was of great importance as a water reservoir for the irrigation of the moats. Every year in November, the tradition of fishing at the great pond is maintained. There is a nature reserve around the lake. The Naturschutzbund Deutschland set up the nature conservation center Biberhof Torgau on the shore in 1995 .
