The Zörbig large stone grave was a Neolithic megalithic burial site near Zörbig in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district , Saxony-Anhalt . It was destroyed at the end of the 19th century.

location

The grave was located east of Zörbig on the Galgenberg . An industrial park extends at this point today .

Research history

The system was discovered during gravel mining. It was excavated by Reinhold Schmidt in 1885/86 and destroyed a little later.

description

The grave had a mound, which contained a north-south oriented burial chamber with a length of over 5 m and a width of 1 m. The chamber consisted of boulders and had a clay - dish as a floor. Since no corridor could be determined, the grave could most likely be addressed as a large dolmen due to its size .

One of the spherical amphorae from the grave

Skeletal remains were apparently no longer preserved. Of grave goods more ceramic vessels, two were Feuerstein - hatchets and a bone-ax found. The vessels consisted of four spherical amphoras , a wide-mouthed pot and two bowls that have only survived in fragments. All finds belong to the late Neolithic spherical amphora culture ; According to Ulrich Fischer , however, this is likely to be a subsequent burial and the actual construction of the grave would be assigned to the Walternienburg or Bernburg culture . The finds are now in the State Museum of Prehistory in Halle (Saale) .
