Political career

In February 2001, Skartveit announced that she was a lesbian and had a girlfriend. At that time she was a member of the Stavanger City Council for the Christian Democratic Party Kristelig Folkeparti (KrF) . She then resigned from the KrF because she was of the opinion that the KrF would not treat a lesbian politician fairly. In March 2002 she joined the liberal Venstre Party.

In 2005, Gro Skartveit ran as a candidate in the Norwegian parliamentary elections , but could not achieve a mandate for the province of Rogaland . In the parliamentary elections in Norway in 2009 , she was a deputy chairman of the committee that drafted her party's election manifesto. In September 2011 she won the election for mayoress of Finnøy . This made her the first female mayor of Venstre after the end of World War II . At the same time, she moved into the Fylkesting of Rogaland Province in 2011 . In February 2012, she took over the post as group leader of the Venstre party there after her predecessor Helge Solum Larsen had to retire after allegations of rape. In the local elections in 2015, she was again the top candidate for Venstre in the municipality of Finnøy, but in which she was defeated by the KrF politician Henrik Halleland .

In February 2018, Skartveit announced that she had got out of Venstre. The reason given for this was the party's entry into the Solberg government . Skartveit said she could not support a collaboration with Høyre and Fremskrittspartiet .
