Ground and Pound (GnP abbreviation) describes in mixed martial arts the strategy of bringing the opponent to the ground and from a dominant position, usually mount , but also side control , more rarely: north-south position an opponent with a takedown or To bring the throw to the ground and hit. Also from the Closed Guard from ground and pound can be used to obtain an exemption from the Guard, especially when the opponent is in Grappling has little knowledge. If the opponent stops active defense, the fight is over and the striker wins.

History of the Ground and Pound

Ground and Pound was first practiced by Mark Coleman , then by fighters such as Don Frye , Chael Sonnen , Frank Trigg , Jon Jones , Cheick Kongo , Mark Kerr , Frank Shamrock , Tito Ortiz , Matt Hughes , Chris Weidman and Khabib Nurmagomedov .

While most fighters use ground-and-pound statically by holding their opponents down and attacking them with short blows from the mount, there are some fighters who use ground-and-pound dynamically by holding their opponents from changing positions attack. One of the most successful ground and pound fighters in MMA, Cain Velasquez is known for continuing to hit his opponents on the ground when transitioning between positions.

Fedor Emelianenko , considered one of the most successful fighters in MMA history, was the first to use this dynamic style of hitting in alternation between positions.

Differentiation from Lay and pray

In 2000, MMA play-by-play commentator Stephen Quadros coined the popular phrase "Lay and pray". ("Lie and Pray") This refers to a situation in which a wrestler or grappler is holding another fighter on the mat or in a controlled manner to avoid standing up, but makes no move to knock out or submit the fight to end.

The implication of lay and pray is that after the wrestler / grappler brings the opponent down and "hangs up" him, that is, he "prays" that the referee does not bring you back to the standing position.

This style is considered by many fans to be the most boring type of combat and has been heavily criticized for deliberately creating "non-action" but is effective. Some argue that lay and pray is warranted and that it is the downcast fighter's legitimate responsibility to protect himself from further attacks.

Many consider John Fitch's style to be the embodiment of lay and pray.

Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has also been criticized by fans for taking “safety” and using lay and pray in his fights, as has Bellator MMA welterweight champion Ben Askren , who justified the tactic and explained that championship fights that go over five rounds are much tougher than the usual three.

Differentiation from knockout

Ground and Pound differs from knockout in that the opponent is actually either in such poor health during the knockout that a further continuation of the fight would no longer be justifiable (technical knockout) or he actually stepped away.

This is not necessarily the case with the ground and pound. The fight can also be ended due to apparent technical dominance, ideally before the opponent is seriously harmed.

Ground and Pound therefore only plays a role in MMA, since in other "hitting" martial arts, such as K-1 , Muay Thai and boxing, the fight is interrupted as soon as an opponent goes down.

Martial arts magazine

Based on the ground-and-pound technique, there is a German-language martial arts magazine of the same name, which appears monthly.
