The Smyrna mine is a former iron mine in the Bensberg ore district in Bergisch Gladbach . The site belongs to the Herkenrath district . The mine field was awarded to iron on June 18, 1868 and was owned by Jews. The city of Izmir was called Smyrna in ancient times . After the conquest of Jerusalem by Titus in the so-called Jewish War many Jewish fled elites to Smyrna in the Diaspora . The authorization file for the Smyrna mine was deleted by a decision of the Bonn Higher Mining Authority on September 18, 1937. This means that it was destroyed in accordance with the zeitgeist of the Nazi regime in order to permanently eliminate the existence of the mine and the memory of this mine name. The following note can be found in the mining land register : “Closed on November 10, 1937 due to the abolition of mine ownership.” The point of discovery was in the Asselborner Weg area, Johanniterstraße, St. Antoniusstraße. Traces of mining are no longer to be found because of the development. Nothing is known about the operating activities.
