The Grumman F9F / F-9 Cougar was a single- engine fighter-bomber for the United States Navy developed by Grumman Aerospace Corporation . It was developed from the F9F Panther .

development

After the F9F Panther was commissioned, work began on developing a swept wing version of this aircraft. The designation F9F shows the relationship with the Panther , but actually the Cougar was a completely new aircraft. The main differences to the Panther were the swept wings, but the engine was also replaced and structural changes were necessary due to the new wings. The wings had an arrow angle of 35 °, spoilers instead of ailerons, larger landing flaps, slats and boundary layer fences. The first machine was put into service in November 1952. The TF-9J type flew many missions in the Vietnam War. The Cougar was used after her retirement as Drohnenleitflugzeug. In addition, both the Panther and the Cougar were used by the Blue Angels for their aerobatic demonstrations in the 1950s .
