Gu Xiulian

Gu Xiulian ( Chinese  顾秀莲 , Pinyin Gù Xiùlián ; born December 1936 in Nantong , Jiangsu ) is a Chinese politician of the Communist Party of China (CCP), who was governor of Jiangsu between 1983 and 1989 , minister for the chemical industry from 1989 to 1998 and between Was president of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) in 2003 and 2008 . She also served as Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress between 2003 and 2008 .

Life

Gu Xiulian, a member of the Han Chinese , was initially a worker in various factories and joined the Ministry of Textile Industry in the mid-1960s. In 1972 she was first Vice-Minister in the State Commission for Family Planning and then in 1973 Vice-Chairwoman of the State Planning Commission . On the XI. 1977 party congress , she was first a candidate and at the XII. 1982 Party Congress Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (Central Committee), of which she was a member until 2002. In 1982, she returned to her home province of Jiangsu, where she was both chairman of the Economic Renewal Commission and vice-secretary of the CCP Provincial Committee until 1989. In April 1983, she succeeded Han Peixin as governor of Jiangsu and held this post until she was replaced by Chen Huanyou in April 1989. She was the first woman to hold the office of governor of a province.

In 1989, Gu Xiulian replaced Qin Zhongda as Minister of Chemical Industry and held this position until the ministry was dissolved in 1998. At the same time, she was secretary of the party group of the Ministry of Chemical Industry between 1989 and 1998. In 1998 she became a member of the National People's Congress . She was Vice President of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) from 1998 to 2003, and also became Vice President of the China Women's Development Fund (CWDF) in 1999. In 2003 she succeeded Peng Peiyun as president of the All-Chinese Women's Association and held this position until she was replaced by Chen Zhili in 2008. She also served as Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress between 2003 and 2008 .
