The Guadalupe River is a nearly 30 km long river in the US state of California .

It runs from the Santa Cruz Mountains in a northerly direction through San José and flows into the San Francisco Bay near Alviso . The river flows through Santa Clara County , mainly parallel to the Silver Creek Fault .

The river is largely embedded in parks and gardens. The five kilometers that the river flows through downtown San José is part of the Guadalupe River Park and Gardens , one of the largest urban parks in the United States .

In addition, the river is home to salmon , making San José the only major city in the United States, apart from Anchorage in Alaska , through whose center the salmon swim up the river to their spawning grounds. However, as the salmon is threatened with extinction, it is forbidden to fish. The fact that the river runs through a former mercury mining area means that the consumption of fish is not advisable anyway.

Surname

The name of the river is derived from the original name of the city of San José, which was founded in 1777 as the Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe . Other rivers of the same name are found in Spanish-speaking areas.

Floods

The river usually overflows in downtown San Jose, south of downtown, and near Alviso in winter. In 1995 and 1997, then US President Bill Clinton declared the area a disaster area because of the flooding. A novelty in NHL history came in March 1995 when the first and so far only game had to be canceled due to rain. The flooding made it impossible for visitors to the game between the San Jose Sharks and the Detroit Red Wings to get into the San Jose Arena to watch the game.

In December 2004 a project to cope with a flood of the century was completed. The greatest flooding dates from 1955.
