Guglielmo Sanfelice d'Acquavella
Guglielmo Sanfelice d'Acquavella OSB (born April 14, 1834 in Aversa , † January 3, 1897 in Naples ) was an Italian cardinal .
Life
Sanfelice was born into a noble Neapolitan family that goes back to the Normans . His parents were Giuseppe Duca d'Aquavella and Giovanna de Martino dei Baroni from Montegiordano . At the age of 17 he joined the Benedictine order and studied first in the Abbey of Cava de 'Tirreni , then at the University of Naples and at the College of Protonotarians in Rome, earning a doctorate in theology and both rights . At the beginning of his studies he was commissioned to teach Latin , Greek and literature in the abbey . In 1857 he was ordained a priest and from 1858 was novice master in the Montecassino Abbey . From 1867 he was dean and vicar general in the Abbey of Cava de 'Tirreni, where he founded the liceo ginnasio in 1874 .
In 1878 he was appointed Archbishop of Naples and on March 24, 1884, he was appointed cardinal by Pope Leo XIII. He received the title from San Clemente . During his tenure there were several earthquakes in Naples and Ischia (Casamicciola, 1881, 1883) and a cholera epidemic in Naples (1884), for which he organized exemplary emergency aid.
He died on January 3, 1897 of lung problems and was first buried in the chapel of S. Maria in Vertecoeli on the Cimitero di Santa Maria del Pianto . His bones were later transferred to the Brancaccio Chapel in the Cathedral of Naples .
The street Via Guglielmo Sanfelice in Casamicciola Terme was named after him.
