Guillaume Le Roy

Guillaume Le Roy († 1493 ) was an incunabula printer who set up the first printing press in Lyon in 1473 .

Life

Guillaume Le Roy comes from Liège , where he first worked before moving to Cologne , Basel , Beromünster and finally to Lyon around 1472. In 1473 he built there for the publisher Barthélemy Buyer the first printing press in the city, on September 17, 1473 was with the Compendium breve , a work of Pope Innocent III. from his time as cardinal, presented the first book vais printed in Lyon. This Latin text is followed by a series of French translations of Latin originals (Old and New Testament and individual Biblical writings, the first French edition of the Speculum historiale by Vincent de Beauvais ) as well as original French texts, particularly novel-like representations such as the first print of the chivalric novel Baudouin, comte de Flandre . After the death of his employer in 1483, he went into business for himself. Within a short time a number of printers were operating in Lyon.

In 1486 Le Roy also printed a French edition of the Llibre dels àngels by the Catalan Franciscan Francesc Eiximenis and a French translation of the letter of the Priest-King John .
