Guillaume de Montfort

Guillaume de Montfort (* in Dinan , France ; † September 27, 1432 in Siena ) was Bishop of Saint-Malo and Cardinal of the Roman Church . His name is also given as Guillaume Ragenel de Montfort .

Life

Guillaume came from the old noble family Montfort-Laval . He was the second of three children from the marriage of Baron Raoul VI. von Montfort and Gaël († March 28, 1394) and Isabeau de Lohéac († 1400).

Guillaume de Montfort was appointed Bishop of Saint-Malo on October 13, 1423. On July 7, 1424 he was proposed for the bishopric of Saint-Brieuc , on May 5, 1430 for the seat of Dol , but he refused in both cases.

On November 8, 1430, Pope Martin V elevated him to cardinal in pectore , which was published in the consistory of March 11, 1432 by Eugene IV , whereupon de Montfort received the red hat on June 13 of the same year and cardinal priest of Sant ' Anastasia al Palatino was appointed. Pope Martin V commissioned him on April 23, 1431 to dissolve the engagement between the Duke of Anjou, Ludwig , and Isabella of Brittany.

The cardinal died on his return to France in Siena and was buried in the local Franciscan church .
