Guinter Kahn (born May 11, 1934 in Trier ; died September 17, 2014 in Miami ) was an American physician and inventor of a hair restorer based on minoxidil .

Life

Guinter Kahn emigrated with his parents to the USA in 1938 before the German persecution of Jews. He studied medicine at the University of Nebraska in Omaha . He served as a doctor in the US Army and was stationed in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1959/60. He then specialized in dermatology and worked at the Medical School of the University of Colorado in Denver .

Structural formula of minoxidil

One of the pharmaceutical company Upjohn (today Pfizer properly) by run in Denver research project on the use of 1963 developed minoxidil against hypertension had 1,971 unwanted hair in some subjects result. Kahn was brought in and he drew the opposite conclusion. Together with the doctor Paul Grant, he developed a tincture based on minoxidil that could specifically influence hair development. This was produced and marketed by Upjohn under the name Rogaine or Regaine . Only after patent disputes with Upjohn, who received the first American patent for a hair restorer in 1977, was Kahn's share in the invention recognized by the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 1986 . However, the successful use of the drug is limited to certain cases. It did not turn out to be the miracle cure Kahn had hoped for; according to a report in the Financial Times (2014), it only works with continuous use and only in 26% of the test subjects. Kahn could not influence his own hair loss.

Kahn later ran a private dermatological practice in Miami . He has lectured in the United States and Europe on the conduct of doctors in the Holocaust .
