The ship was built as the 24th ship of the Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Emsland, for Indonesia under the hull number p. 664. Construction began with the first steel cut on February 13, 2007. It belongs to the Type 2000 specially developed for inter-island traffic in Indonesia. The operator of the ship is PT. Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia.

On June 21, 2008 the ship was christened and handed over to the shipping company. The godmother of the ship was Arita Jusman, the wife of the Indonesian Minister of Transport.

The ship is named after the Indonesian volcano Dempo .
