Gustav Adolf Kenngott (born January 6, 1818 in Breslau ; † March 4, 1897 in Lugano ; variant name Johann Gustav Adolph Kenngott ) was a mineralogist .

Life

The father was a master glove maker and came from Reutlingen. From 1830 to 1838 Gustav Adolf Kenngott attended the Maria-Magdalenen-Gymnasium in Breslau . From 1838 he studied natural sciences at the University of Breslau . In 1842 he became a doctor of philosophy doctorate .

From 1844 to 1850 he worked as a private lecturer at the University of Breslau . From 1850 to 1852 he was a teacher at the secondary school in Bratislava . He then worked as a curator of the mineral collections of the kk Hofmineraliencabinet in Vienna from 1852 to 1856.

From 1857 to 1893 he was also full professor of mineralogy at the ETH Zurich and at the University of Zurich . From 1875 to 1881 he was rector of the Poly , as ETH Zurich was still called at that time.

Gustav Adolf Kenngott had been a member of the Leopoldina since 1852 and a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg) . He was a member of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors .

Act

Gustav Adolf Kenngott earned services in the development of petrology and mineralogy into modern natural sciences. The focus of his work was on systematic mineralogical investigations in the Carpathian region. He is the author of several textbooks on petrography and mineralogy as well as the first descriptor of several newly discovered minerals such as acanthite , enstatite , grunerite , hydrozincite , piemontite , milarite and pilsenite . He also coined the names that are still valid today for various minerals, including Freibergite , Galena and Hemimorphite .
