Gustav Hans Graber (born May 17, 1893 in Vorimholz, today Grossaffoltern , † April 12, 1982 in Bern ) was a Swiss psychologist and psychoanalyst . He is considered a pioneer of pre- and perinatal research in the context of psychology.

Overview of life and work

Graber was born and raised in the Bernese Seeland . He attended the teachers' seminar, then he studied psychology at the University of Bern . In 1924 he received his doctorate . His dissertation The Ambivalence of the Child appeared in the same year as Otto Rank's book The Trauma of Birth , which has a similar approach and was rejected by Freud . Graber was a member of the German Psychoanalytic Society (DPG) and thus of the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPV) .

In 1929 he opened his own psychoanalytic practice in Stuttgart . From 1941 to 1943 he worked at the Stuttgart Institute for Psychological Research and Psychotherapy . In 1943 he returned to Bern. He deals intensively with the psychology of Carl Gustav Carus , which he contrasts with Freudian psychoanalysis. Together with Ernst Blum , he founded the Bern Working Group for Depth Psychology and the Institute for Depth Psychology , both of which he headed until 1970. 1949-64 he was editor of the journal Der Psychologe . In 1971 he was co-founder and first chairman of the International Study Group for Prenatal Psychology in Vienna .
