Gustav Köhler (born April 1, 1839 in Zellerfeld , † March 25, 1923 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German mining inspector and professor of mining science at the Clausthal mining academy .

Life

Köhler came from an old family of miners in the Harz. His father Wilhelm Köhler (1807–1868) was a mountain factor and his grandfather Georg Heinrich Köhler was an upper climber. His mother Lisette Böhm (1814–1893) was the daughter of the moving walker Heinrich Gottlieb Böhm and Wilhmine Augustine Lips . He had two brothers, the military doctor Albert (1850-1936) and the miner Wilhelm (1853-1940). Gustav Köhler married Alwine Mehnert from Goslar in Clausthal in 1871 . The couple had 2 sons and 3 daughters.

He studied in Clausthal from 1856 to 1860 and was appointed mountain assessor in 1871 after passing the Prussian state examination. He initially worked as a mining inspector for the Silesian joint stock company for mining and zinc smelting in Lipine and from 1875 as director of the Graeflich-Westphalian mining administration in Wicklitz (Bohemia). In 1876 he became a teacher at the Bergschule in Bochum , and in 1880 a lecturer in mining science and processing at the United Bergakademie and Bergschule in Clausthal. From 1887 to 1909 he was its director.
