Gustav Mennicke (* 1899 in Petershagen , † 1988 in Goting on Föhr ) was a German painter.

life and work

Gustav Mennicke took part in the war on the Western Front from 1917 to 1918 and suffered a serious wound off Verdun. He studied from 1919 to 1923 at the craft and applied arts school in Bielefeld , where he was a master student of Otto Gussmann and Ludwig Godewols . From 1925 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden with Ludwig von Hofmann and Robert Sterl and for a few months with Otto Dix . From 1930 he lived in Berlin, temporarily shared his apartment with Joachim Ringelnatz and was friends with Emil Nolde . The friendship broke due to Emil Nolde's attitude towards the National Socialists.

Mennicke participated in the Dresden "Gruppe 1930", which was founded in March 1930 together with the painters Adolf Brockmann , Gustav Alfred Müller , Rolf Tillmann and Otto Westphal-Rudolstadt .

In 1932 Mennicke lived for a year on the Hallig Südfall with the "Halliggräfin" Diana von Reventlow-Criminil . In 1933 he went back to Berlin. After his apartment had been searched by the security police in 1934 , he left Berlin again and moved with his family to Goting auf Föhr , where he had the building contractor Heymann build a house not far from the Gotingen cliffs and paid for it with pictures. He lived in Goting until his death in 1988.

The art historian Ulrich Schulte-Wülwer wrote that the "achievements (Mennickes) have not yet been adequately recognized".
