Kubitzki system

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kubitzki system is a system of plant taxonomy that was developed by Klaus Kubitzki . It forms the framework for the ongoing English-language inventory of vascular plants entitled The Families and Genera of Vascular Plants , which has grown to 15 volumes in 2018. This botanical encyclopedia is a multi-volume treatment of vascular plants with identification keys and a description of all families and genera , mostly carried out by specialists for the respective plant groups. The Kubitzki system served as the basis for the classification in Mabberley's Plant-Book , a dictionary of vascular plants. Mabberley notes in his introduction on page xi of the 2008 edition that the Kubitzki system is the standard by which other works are measured.

Regarding the position of orders and families, the system in its first volumes of the Bedecktsamer is quite similar to the systems of Dahlgren (monocots) and Cronquist (dicots), but the later volumes were influenced by results of molecular phylogenetics .

The first volume in the series ( Pteridophytes and Gymnosperms ) deals with the lycophytes , monilophytes and gymnosperms and was published in 1990. A further nine volumes were published by 2010, which cover 39 of the 59 orders of flowering plants recognized by the APG III system . Volume 9 contains the order Saxifragales apart from the genus Medusandra , which was moved here from the Malpighiales in 2009 . Volume 10 (2011) deals with the Myrtaceae family and the Cucurbitales and Sapindales orders . Volume 11 (Malpighiales) appeared in 2014, volumes 12 ( Santalales , Balanophorales ) and 13 ( Poaceae ) in 2015. Volume 2 and 5-7 deal with dicots , while volumes 3, 4 and 13 describe monocots . Volumes 8–15 deal with eudicotyledons .

Because it is the result of an ongoing work process, the Kubitzki system is still incomplete for those groups of plants that have not yet been dealt with, and groups that have already been completely described have not yet been analyzed in the light of the latest knowledge. Since the first volume was first published in 1990, much new knowledge has been gained in the field of plant taxonomy, mainly through phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences . During this period the classification of ferns was completely overhauled. Some gymnosperm families have also been revised.

In the field of flowering plants, the Kubitzki system follows the drafts of the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group , last updated in 2009 (APG III), with the exception of the recognition of smaller split-off families.

classification

Volumes 5 to 8 do not list any groups with a higher taxonomic rank than the order.

Volume 9 is dedicated to the higher-level groups Rosidae and Asteridae

Volume 10 describes the orders Sapindales and Cucurbitales as well as the family Myrtaceae (from Myrtales).

Volume 11 deals with the rest of the Malpighiales (except for the families Achariaceae , Malpighiaceae , Salicaceae )

Volume 12 contains the orders Santalales and Balanophorales
