The Asteliaceae are a family in the order of the asparagus-like (Asparagales) within the monocotyledons (monocotyledons).
distribution
The species have their areas from New Zealand to New Guinea , from the Pacific islands to the east to Hawaii , in Chile and on the Mascarene Islands .
description
There are perennial herbaceous plants that develop rhizomes .
The inflorescences are branched with large bracts . The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry and mostly threefold, but individual taxa can have certain flower organs in larger numbers. The bloom cladding sheets are designed the same ( perigone ). A capsule fruit or usually a berry is formed.
Systematics
In the Asteliaceae family there are two to four genera with about 37 species:
- Astelia Banks & Sol. ex R. Br. , with around 31 species from the Mascarene Islands, New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand and Polynesia to Hawaii, Chile and New Caledonia
- Collospermum Skottsb. , with five species in New Zealand, Fiji Islands, and Samoa. According to R. Govaerts, the species belong to the genus Astelia .
- Milligania Hook. f. , with about five species in Tasmania

Neoastelia J.B. Williams , with only one species:
- Neoastelia spactabilis J.B. Williams ; it occurs in northeastern New South Wales.
