The Nitrariaceae are a family of plants within the order of the soap tree-like (Sapindales). For some authors, nitraria is the only genus in the family. The home is arid and semi-arid areas in North Africa , in central, northern and western Asia , in southern Australia (only Nitraria billardierei ) and in Southeast Europe to Asia Minor (only Charmykstrauch ( Nitraria schoberi )).
description
They are deciduous shrubs that are mostly succulent and reach heights of 0.5 to 2 meters. Some species have thorns . The opposite, arranged in bundles or spirally on the branch leaves are simple, entire, lobed or with two to three teeth; they can be stalked or semi-sitting. There are narrow stipules .
The flowers stand alone or grouped in cymes . The hermaphrodite flowers are three, four or five-fold. The often five petals are white or yellowish green. There are (10 to) 15 free stamens . Two to six carpels have become an under constant ovary grown.
Nitraria form purple, red or yellow drupes and peganum and tetradiclis capsule fruits .
Systematics
The family includes about one to three genera with 11 to 18 species:
- Nitraria L .: The seven to eleven species are distributed from the western Sahara to Central Asia and Australia .
-
Peganum L. (including Malacocarpus Fisch. & CAMey. ) It contains about four to six species (with capsule fruits), including for example:
- Steppe rue ( Peganum harmala L. ): It occurs mainly in deserts, semi-deserts and steppes from western Asia to northern India , and occasionally also in the Mediterranean region.
