Lophopyxis maingayi is the only type of monotypic genus Lophopyxis , the only genus of the family of Lophopyxidaceae within the order of plants of Malpighienartigen (Malpighiales).

Lophopyxis maingayi is a liana . There are clock-spring-like tendrils. The alternate is arranged on the branches of deciduous leaves are simple and have a serrated edge. Stipules are present.
Lophopyxis maingayi is single sexed ( monoecious ). In an axillary, branched, loose overall inflorescence are panicles or knäuelige part inflorescences together with many flowers. The small, radial symmetry , functionally unisexual flowers are five-fold. The five sepals are very short. The five petals do not touch. In the male flowers there are two circles with five stamens each, five of which are reduced to staminodes. In the female flowers staminodes are included and the four to five carpels are a syncarp, Upper permanent, hairy ovary grown. There are two ovules in each ovary chamber . There are four or five sessile scars; a stylus is not recognizable.
A winged, single-seeded nut fruit (samara) is formed, with five broad, straw-like wings.

Lophopyxis maingayi is distributed from the tropical islands of the Malay Archipelago to the Sunda Islands and the Caroline Islands .
Systematics
The genus Lophopyxis was established in 1887 with the species Lophopyxis maingayi by Joseph Dalton Hooker in Hooker's Icones Plantarum , 18, plate 1714. The specific epithet maingayi honors the British doctor and botanist Alexander Carroll Maingay (1836–1869).
Previously, the genus Lophopyxis was placed in the Celastraceae family . The closest related is the Putranjivaceae family .
