The Campynemataceae are a family of plants from the order of the lily-like (Liliales). The two genera with only four species occur in New Caledonia and Tasmania .

description

The Campynemataceae species are small, upright, perennial herbaceous plants . The above-ground parts of the plant are bare. They grow from a short rhizome ( Campynema ) or a tufted root neck ( Campynemanthe ). The sessile leaves are divided into leaf sheath and leaf blade. The simple leaf blades are linear or lanceolate and three-toothed at the tip of the leaf. The leaves contain plenty of needle-shaped calcium oxalate crystals (raphids). The leaves of Campynemanthe stand together in a basal leaf rosette and Campynema only has a single basal leaf.

The flowers are individually or collectively in rispigen or scheindoldigen inflorescences , with high leaves (bracts).

The relatively small, hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and threefold. The six bracts are free and equally shaped. There are two circles with three fertile stamens each. The stamens are fused with the bracts at the base. Three carpels have become an under constant ovary grown. The genus Campynemanthe has one stylus and the genus Campynema has three styluses and an equal number of stigmas.

The capsule fruits contain 20 to 50 seeds. The seeds are bright red-brown in color.

Systematics and distribution

The Campynemataceae family comprises two genera with only four species:

Molecular genetic studies allow the conclusion that they, together with their sister group, the Corsiaceae , form a basal clade within the Liliales .
