description

Detail of an inflorescence with flowers

Vegetative characteristics

Lanaria lanata is a perennial herbaceous plant . It forms a vertically growing rhizome as a permanent organ. Many parts of the plant have branched (dendritic) hairs (trichomes). The two-line to spiral leaves are simple and have parallel veins. The leaf margin is smooth.

Generative characteristics

The flowers are arranged in short-branched racemose inflorescences . The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and threefold. The six identical bloom cladding sheets ( tepals ) are fused from their base about half the length to form a tube. There are six stamens . The three carpels are a half under constant ovary grown with two ovules per ovary chamber. The long style ends in a small, more or less three-lobed, cephalic scar.

The capsule fruit contains only one seed.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

The first publication of this species was in 1753 under the name ( Basionym ) Hyacinthus lanatus Carl von Linné Species Plantarum , page 318. The new combination to Lanaria lanata (L.) T.Durand & Schinz was in 1894 by T.Durand and Schinz in Consp. Fl. Afric. , Volume 5, page 239. Other synonyms for Lanaria lanata (L.) T.Durand & Schinz are: Argolasia lanata (L.) Lam. ex Poir. , Argolasia capensis J.F. Gmel . , Argolasia plumosa (Aiton) Juss. , Dilatris hexandra Lam. , Lanaria plumosa Aiton .

The genus Lanaria was founded in 1789 by William Aiton in Hort. Kew. , 1, page 462. A synonym of Lanaria Aiton nom. cons. is Argolasia Juss.

The genus Lanaria was also in the family Tecophilaeaceae Leyb. classified. The Lanariaceae H.Huber ex R.Dahlgren & AEvanWijk family is closest to the Asteliaceae Dumort. and Hypoxidaceae R.Br. related.

The Lanariaceae family contains only one monotypic genus:

  • Lanaria Aiton : It contains only one species:
    • Lanaria lanata (L.) T.Durand & Schinz : It is common in the South African provinces of the Eastern Cape and Western Cape . The stocks are stable. It is classified in the Red List of Endangered Species in South Africa as “least concern” = “not endangered”.
