Misodendrum (a different spelling was previously possible: Misodendron G.Don orth var or.. Myzodendron R. Br. Orth var..) Is the only genus of monotypic family of Misodendraceae J. Agardh (formerly also different spelling: Myzodendraceae).

Occurrence

The homeland of the misodendrum species is limited to southern South America. There they thrive in the cool, temperate climate.

description

Misodendrum species are parent parasites of Nothofagus species, more precisely hemiparasites . The alternate, simple leaves are reduced in some species; in some species the leaves of flowering branches are quite different from those of non-flowering branches.

The plants are dioecious separately sexed ( diocesan ). The kitten-like inflorescences are compound panicles or spikes . The male flowers have no bracts and only a circle of stamens with two or three free stamens. The female flowers have three bloom and they are the three carpels to a partially permanent ovary grown. They form nut-like fruits with three long appendages (they are feathery staminodes ) that are spread by the wind.
