Pterostemon is the only genus of the family of Pterostemonaceae .
description
The Pterostemon species are resin-rich, well-branched shrubs . The alternate and spiral leaves, which are heaped at the branch tips, are petiolate and simple. The leaf margin is serrated. The top of the leaf is glossy. The underside of the leaf is hairy. They are small, early sloping Stipules present.
The terminal, zymous or umbrella-like inflorescences have few flowers . The flowers are hermaphrodite, radial symmetry and five-fold. The flower cup ( hypanthium ) is only indistinct. The five sepals are fused. The five free petals are nailed. There are two circles with five stamens each. The outer circle consists of free, fertile stamens , the inner circle of staminodes . The stamens are wide, winged and toothed. The pollen are tricolporate. Five carpels have become an under constant ovary grown. Each ovary chamber contains four to six ovules . The stylus ends in a five-lobed scar.
The woody, few-seeded, five-lobed capsule fruit is crowned by upright sepals and curved petals. The seeds have no endosperm .
Of ingredients are flavonols such. B. Quercetin present.
Systematics and distribution
The Pterostemonaceae family is close to the Saxifragaceae , Grossulariaceae, and Iteaceae families .
There are about three species in the genus Pterostemon and thus in the family Pterostemonaceae. They are native to subtropical to tropical Mexico.
