The distribution area of the genus is in East Asia. It extends from Japan and South Korea through China to the rear of India . The Malaysian and Indonesian islands are also settled. An isolated occurrence can be found in Sri Lanka and in southern India.

Systematics

The genus Daphniphyllum was established by Carl Ludwig Blume in 1827 , and in 1869 it was classified in the Daphniphyllaceae family. The closer relationships among the saxifrage species are still unclear, as the sister group of Daphniphyllum both cake trees ( Cercidiphyllaceae ) and peonies (Paeoniaceae) have been named. The genus includes between ten and over 30 species, depending on the author. The only species occasionally cultivated as an ornamental wood in Central Europe is Daphniphyllum macropodum .
