Barbeuia madagascariensis is the only plant species of the only genus Barbeuia ofthe Barbeuiaceae family . For some authors, this species is also classified in the Phytolaccaceae family. But in both cases it is within the order of the carnation-like (Caryophyllales).
Occurrence
Barbeuia madagascariensis is only native to Madagascar . The sites are in the provinces of Antsiranana , Fianarantsoa , Toamasina , Toliara at altitudes between 0 and 1500 meters, so it is widespread within Madagascar. It grows in forests in humid to sub-humid climates.
description
Habit and leaves
Barbeuia madagascariensis grows as a large liana . There is anomalous secondary growth . All parts of the plant turn black when dry. The alternate leaves are stalked and simple. The leaf margins are smooth. The stomata are anomocytic. Stipules are missing.
Inflorescences and flowers
On the side of long inflorescence shafts are short, stiff, racemose inflorescences with bracts . The hermaphrodite, radially symmetrical flowers are five-fold. There is only one circle with five bracts , which are sepal-like and are also preserved on the fruit. They have many (30 to 100) fertile stamens . The two carpels are a top permanent (syncarp) ovary grown, with only one campylotropen ovule in each of the two chambers ovary. The stylus, which is usually barely recognizable, ends in two thick, upright to extended, only very briefly overgrown scars.
Fruits and seeds
A woody, two-chamber capsule fruit is formed that contains only one or two seeds. The partially surrounded by a fleshy Arillus surrounded seeds have endosperm and a well-trained, curved embryo.
Systematics
The first description of Barbeuia madagascariensis was in 1841 by Ernst Gottlieb von Steudel in Nomenclator Botanicus , Editio secunda 1, p. 186. However, the genus Barbeuia was established in 1806 by Louis Marie Aubert Du Petit-Thouars in Genera Nova Madagascariensia , 6. The Tribus Barbeuieae was published in 1872 by Henri Ernest Baillon in Histoire des Plantes , 4, 46-52 and included in the Phytolaccaceae R.Br. posed. The surname Barbeuiaceae was taken from Takenoshin Nakai in J. Jap. Bot. , 18, p. 105 published in March 1942.
Within the order of the Caryophyllales , the Barbeuiaceae are basal in a clade together with the Aizoaceae , Gisekiaceae , Sarcobataceae , Phytolaccaceae and Nyctaginaceae .
