The Davalliaceae are a family of plants within the genus true ferns (Polypodiopsida).

features

They are perennial herbaceous plants . The rhizomes are long creeping. They have a dictyostele , are dorsiventral, and have scales. Old leaves fall off together with their leaf bases. The leaf blades are usually one to fourfold pinnate, rarely undivided. Sterile and fertile leaves are designed in the same way (monomorphic). The nerves end freely, branch bifurcated or feathery.

The Sori are on the underside of the leaf, near the leaf margin (inframarginal) or clearly separated from the margin. They are round with cup-, kidney- or moon-shaped indusia . The sporangia have a three-row, long stalk. The annulus is vertical. The spores are ellipsoidal, monolet (simple scar), yellow to brown.

The gametophyte is green and heart-shaped.

The basic chromosome number is x = 40.

Locations

The species of the Davalliaceae family thrive in the Paleotropic . Most species grow epiphytically , less often epipetrically .

Systematics and distribution

The Davalliaceae family is likely monophyletic to the extent specified here . Its sister taxons are the Polypodiaceae . The generic boundaries of Araiostegia , Davallia and Pachypleuria against each other are poorly defined, all are likely to be para- or polyphyletic in the current scope.

The species of the Davalliaceae family are mainly distributed from subtropical to tropical Asia. A few species reach as far as Africa , one species occurs in northwestern Africa, in southwestern Europe and Macaronesia . In China there are four genera with around 17 species, three of which are only there.

The Davalliaceae family comprises four or five genera with a total of 35 to 65 species:

  • Araiostegia Copel. (Syn .: Araiostegiella M.Kato & Tsutsumi ): The ten or so species are distributed from India via Myanmar to China . Southwest China is the center of biodiversity. There are about four species in, one of which is only there.
  • Harespaw ferns ( Davallia Sm. , Syn .: Humata Cav. , Parasorus Alderw. , Scyphularia Fée ): The approximately 40 species are widespread from islands in the Atlantic Ocean to Africa and South Asia to Malaysia , Japan , northeastern Australia and the Pacific islands. There are six species in China, one of which is only there. Including the only European species of this family:
  • Davallodes (Copel.) Copel. : There are about two species in Malaysia .
  • Humata Cav. ( Pachypleuria (C.Presl) C.Presl) : The approximately 50 species are mainly distributed from Southeast Asia to Polynesia . There are four types in China.
  • Paradavallodes Ching : The three or so species occur in western to southwest China, northern India, Nepal , Myanmar and northern Vietnam. All three types exist in China, one of them only there.
