The Sarcolaenaceae are a family of plants in the order of the Mallow-like (Malvales). This family contains eight to ten genera with 40 to 60 species. The species have their areas only in Madagascar , mostly in the eastern and central area.

description

They are mostly evergreen trees or bushes . The alternately arranged, stalked leaves are simple and often leathery. The leaf margin is smooth. The stipules are often large.

The flowers are arranged in zymose , umbellate or paniculate inflorescences . The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry . There are usually three or less often up to five free sepals available; if there are five then the outer two are smaller than the inner three. There are usually five, rarely six, mostly free petals ; sometimes they are slightly fused at their base. The crown is twisted. In Leptolaena there are five to ten, in the other genera there are twelve or usually up to 200 stamens ; they are freely among each other or grouped into five to ten bundles. Either all of the stamens are fertile or some of them have been converted to staminodes . Usually three to four (one to five) carpels are a top permanent ovary fused with one to 15 ovules per ovary chamber. The style ends in a mostly lobed scar.

They form nut fruits or capsule fruits .
