Fouquieria is the only genus of the monogeneric family of the Fouquieriaceae within the order of the heather-like (Ericales), with only eleven species . The generic name honors the French doctor Pierre Fouquier (1776–1850).
description
Fouquieria species are xeromorphic shrubs with mostly upright branches. Some species can reach a height of up to 15 meters. There are two types of sheets. The simple, full-margined leaves are alternate and spirally arranged on short shoots , they usually only appear after rainfall. There are thorns on long shoots . The second type of leaves are located around the mandrel in several groups.
After rains, in spring, the plants begin to bloom. Many flowers are grouped in paniculate , spiked or racemose inflorescences . The hermaphroditic, five-fold flowers have a double perianth . There are five free, unequal sepals . The five red, pale purple, cream-colored or yellow petals are fused tubular. There are ten or more (up to 23) free stamens . Three carpels have become a top permanent ovary grown. Each ovary compartment usually has 14 to 18 (6 to 20) ovules . The three styles are only partially fused.
Fouquieria species form tripartite capsule fruits . The seeds are winged.
