Gustav Schüler (writer)

Gustav Schüler (born January 27, 1868 in Neureetz , † August 20, 1938 in Bad Freienwalde (Oder) ) was a German writer . Gustav Schüler's published literary work comprises more than 20 books. The poet student wrote more than 1,500 poems, in addition he also worked as a narrator and playwright.

Gustav Schüler was born in Königlich Reetz number 26 (today Neureetz a district of Oderaue ) and grew up here in poor conditions. In 1883 he attended a teacher training college in Königsberg in the Neumark and worked as a teacher for several years. He later worked as a newspaper editor in Itzehoe , Hamburg , Berlin and Frankfurt (Oder) . He was in an exchange of letters with Detlev von Liliencron , Hermann Hesse , Emil von Schoenaich-Carolath , Börries Freiherr von Münchhausen and Ernst von Wildenbruch, among others . From 1903 he worked as a freelance writer.

In 1910 he married Elisabeth Kahnmeyer from Braunschweig in Hahnenklee in the Harz region. She had a son named Ernst-Gustav (* 1912) and a daughter named Lia (* 1915). Schüler wrote well over 1000 poems with a focus on God, nature and home. Some poems were set to music (including in op. 31 by Ulrich Hildebrandt ) and taken over into the church hymn books. On the occasion of his 70th birthday, he received many honors. In addition to the Luther Medal , he was the first recipient of the Kurmärkische literacy foundation .

Bad Freienwalde was his hometown from 1921 until his death. Today there is a Gustav-Schüler-Weg here. His grave in Bad Freienwalde has not survived.

For the 150th birthday of the poet Gustav Schüler, Martin Werhand Verlag published the volume Bergnebel in January 2018 in the poetry classics series 50 timeless poems.
