Simon Albrecht Gustav Schalk (born July 31, 1874 in Unterwüsten ; † November 27, 1930 ibid) was a German certified farmer , inventor, member of the Lippe state parliament , president of the Chamber of Agriculture and head (mayor) of the independent community Unterwüsten.

Life

Schalk was born in 1874 on Schalks Hof (Unterwüsten Nr. 8) in the district of Sundern as the first son of the married couple Pauline Louise Auguste born. Klocke and Gustav Adolph Schalk were born. His parents were married on July 1, 1870, two sisters, Wilhelmine Eleonore Auguste (1871) and Emilie Pauline (1871), were born before him.

As the eldest son, Gustav Schalk was an inheritance and had to support his mother in running the farm after the early death of his father, who died of nerve fever in 1881 at the age of 36 .

At the beginning, Schalk went to the Unterwüstener Küsterschule, after which he probably went to a high school in one of the surrounding cities. Later he worked on the farm in the summer months and studied in the winter months at the agricultural school in Kassel , which he graduated with a degree in farmer.

Schalk was a tinkerer, inventor and progressive farmer. On his farm he had the first feed silo Unterwüstens built, and he was constantly improving the efficiency of his farm equipment. The protected "Schalk's Kartoffelhäufelpflug Progress " was produced many times and sold throughout Germany.

By marriage, Schalk was related to the member of the state parliament and most famous of the leaders of the "Conservative Party in the Principality of Lippe", Wilhelm Schemmel . Schemmel, as the owner of the Unterwüsten No. 6 farm, was Schalk's neighbor and became his political foster father: when Wilhelm Schemmel died in 1909, Gustav Schalk's political ascent began.

But Schalk was not only committed to major politics: for many years he was a member of the Wüsten church council , church elder and also a member of the synod of the Lippe regional church.

On November 27, 1930, Schalk was torn from life by a tragic accident: He, who had been struggling with heart problems for years, must have slipped into the yard pond and suffered a stroke while trying to free himself from the water . Around a thousand mourners accompanied him on his last way to the desert cemetery .

“The deceased dedicated his services to the community for two decades. May his tireless zeal and his always helpful, self-sacrificing nature serve as an example to us. We deeply regret the early passing of this good man. We will always keep an honorable memory of him in our community. "

Political career

In 1912 Schalk entered the state parliament and, despite his relatively young age, was elected by class Ia of large agricultural estates as their representative.
In the state parliament, torn by sharp factual contradictions - town and country, conservatives and liberals faced each other - Gustav Schalk was one of the conciliatory, he tried to balance personal and factual differences. The war that broke out soon thereafter strengthened his striving for balance.

After the defeat and the November Revolution on November 9, 1918, Gustav Schalk lost his mandate in the state parliament and he retired to his parents' farm. But he soon found a new political home in the newly formed conservative rural people and peasant movement in the Free State of Lippe . He was rooted in the peasantry and represented their interests. Preserving agriculture as the basis of existence became his life's work, and this tireless work was crowned by his election as President of the Chamber of Agriculture in June 1930.

In addition to his work in the state parliament and for the Chamber of Agriculture, Gustav Schalk was head (mayor) of the independent community of Unterwüsten for over two decades.
