The historical part of the cemetery in deserts is one with the number 19 in the list of monuments of the city Bad Salzuflen in North Rhine-Westphalia Lippe in Germany registered monument .

history

The "Totenhof"

In 1620 the Wüsten parish church was built for the two farmers in the upper and lower deserts. Both belonged, like eleven other farmers, to the parish of Schötmar .
There was no cemetery yet: The desert dead were buried in the “desert corner” of the cemetery at the Schötmarschen Church , but the path across the Vierenberg , popularly known as “Bumbamweg”, on which the “ Bum-Bam ” of the bells can be heard The Kilian's Church heard when the height of the Four Mountain was exceeded was long and arduous.

In 1625 Wüsten got its own “court of death”, to the right of the church - today it is located between the road to Vlotho and the church. Some old gravestones, which remind of earlier times and long-established families, still bear witness to the former resting place at this point.

After the church cemetery was enlarged in 1770, 1784, 1872, 1913 (1259 m²) and 1940 (1918 m²), it had an occupancy area of ​​8382 square meters at the end of the 20th century .

Even non-deserts found their peace here: on March 25, 1944, four Australians , the crew of a four-engine bomber that had been shot down by German fighters in the night of March 23-24 and crashed on the Vierenberg, buried in the desert cemetery. After the war the soldiers were reburied in the Hannover War Cemetery .

Due to an acute shortage of space, a second cemetery, now owned by the city of Bad Salzuflen, was created above the "Old Village" in the mid-1960s. Both cemeteries serve as the final resting place for the desert citizens.
