Gustav Schmidt (artist)

Gustav Schmidt (born February 12, 1888 in Peine , † November 8, 1972 in Dresden ) was a German painter , graphic artist , sculptor and teacher .

Life

Schmidt completed a teacher training course and taught at the Realgymnasium Peine from 1908. He then studied painting and graphics with Robert Sterl , Osmar Schindler and Carl Bantzer at the Dresden Art Academy . He was a master student at Otto Gussmann in the years 1911 to 1913. Gustav Schmidt was in the First World War severely wounded and returned in 1917 as an art teacher to the secondary school Peine back, since 1919 he lived as a freelance artist in Dresden.

Gustav Schmidt, influenced by expressive and critical realism, often devoted himself to ancient and biblical subjects. His artistic work includes the paintings Sturm (1926) and Bettler (1930) as well as the graphic series Passion Christi .

Gustav Schmidt was a member of the German Association of Artists .
