Gustavo A. Ponce (born April 20, 1952 in Venezuela ) is a Venezuelan mathematician .

Life

Ponce studied at the Universidad Central de Venezuela with a bachelor's degree in 1976 and at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University with a master's degree in 1980 and his doctorate in 1982 under Sergiu Klainerman (and Louis Nirenberg , dissertation Long time stability of solutions of nonlinear evolution equations ). He was instructor from 1976 and from 1984 to 1986 assistant professor at the Universidad Central de Venezuela, from 1982 to 1984 visiting professor at Berkeley, from 1986 assistant professor at the University of Chicago , from 1989 associate professor at Pennsylvania State University and from 1991 professor at the university of California, Santa Barbara .

He was visiting professor at IMPA , the Institute for Advanced Study (2004), MSRI , the University of Paris-Süd, the University of Bonn, the Institut Henri Poincaré , the University of the Basque Country and the Autonomous University of Madrid.

Ponce studies nonlinear partial differential equations (PDE) using methods of harmonic analysis and looking at the qualitative behavior of solutions of PDE of mathematical physics such as the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations of hydrodynamics.

In 1998 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin ( On nonlinear dispersive equations ). In 2012 he became a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
