Sergiu Klainerman (born May 13, 1950 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian-American mathematician who deals with analysis .

Klainerman studied from 1969 to 1974 at the University of Bucharest (diploma in 1973) and then at New York University , where he received his doctorate in 1978 under Fritz John and Louis Nirenberg ( Global existence for nonlinear wave equations ). As a post-doc he was a Miller Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley , and from 1980 Assistant Professor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University , where he became Associate Professor in 1983 and Professor in 1986. Since 1987 he has been a professor at Princeton University , since 1991 as Fine Professor of Mathematics and since 2001 as Thomas D. Jones Professor of Mathematical Physics . He was visiting professor at Stanford University , the University of Paris VI , Pierre et Marie Curie (Blaise Pascal Chair 1997 to 1999), the IHES , the École polytechnique and École normal supérieure , at the Weizmann Institute and the Hebrew University in Israel, in Beijing, Kyoto, Rome, the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa , the ETH Zurich , the Isaac Newton Institute of the University of Cambridge , the University of Heidelberg , the University of Bonn and the Institute for Advanced Study .

Klainerman specializes in partial differential equations and mathematical physics, where he worked on, among other things, the mathematics of black holes and other mathematical aspects in general relativity . With Demetrios Christodoulou in 1990 he demonstrated the global stability of the Minkowski region. In 2015, together with Igor Rodnianski and Jérémie Szeftel , he proved the curvature conjecture for the initial value problem of the Einstein vacuum equations, which he himself had established fifteen years earlier.

In 1999 he received the Bôcher Memorial Prize with Christodolou . He received the award for his work on nonlinear hyperbolic differential equations, especially his above-mentioned work with Christodolou and his fundamental work with M. Machedon on well-being (of the Cauchy problem ) and global stability issues for nonlinear wave equations (such as Yang-Mills equations , Wave -Maps, Maxwell - Klein-Gordon equation ) and the central zero-form condition they introduced. They proceeded from space-time estimations of the Strichartz type and developed them further using the zero-form structure of the non-linear wave equations considered.

He has been a member of the National Academy of Sciences since 2005, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1996 and a foreign member of the French Academy of Sciences since 2002. In 1997/98 he was a Guggenheim Fellow, a Sloan Research Fellow from 1983 to 1985 and a MacArthur Fellow from 1991 to 1996 . He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . In 1983 he was invited speaker at the ICM in Warsaw (Long time behavior of solutions of nonlinear wave equations). From 1993 to 1999 he was editor of the American Journal of Mathematics.

Gustavo Ponce is one of his doctoral students .
