High school at the Barkhof

The Oberschule Am Barkhof is a state high school in Bremen - Schwachhausen in the Barkhof district . The name is derived from the Low German Birkenhof. The school looks back on over a hundred years of history under different names.

history

The New Gymnasium , 1911

Until 1900 Bremen had only one higher school, the secondary school on Dechanatstraße. From 1905 to 1910 two new grammar schools were built in Bremen: The new grammar school Am Barkhof and the secondary school on Kaiser-Friedrich-Straße , later Hermann-Böse-Straße .

The new school was a boys' school, which as a reform school , which initially had a modern language with French orientation in the lower third followed Latin and Greek in the Untersekunda.

In 1936, the name Oberschule was uniformly introduced for almost all grammar schools in the German Reich . In 1938 the high schools in Bremen were given a namesake; the school was now called the Carl Peters School . In 1939 it was converted to a secondary school with a focus on natural sciences.

After 1945 the high school became the Am Barkhof grammar school with a focus on natural science and modern language. In 1950, co-education was introduced and boys and girls were taught together. After around fifty years of existence, the Am Barkhof grammar school was closed in 1989.

The premises were then used by the University of Bremen and temporarily by the Hermann-Böse-Gymnasium . Since 2012 there is again the Oberschule Am Barkhof with the school focus music / theater, mathematics and natural sciences.

building

The three-story building was built between 1903 and 1906 according to plans by Paul Baumgarten from Berlin. The turn-of-the-century building in the style of historicism combined neoclassical and neo-baroque elements as well as those from the neo-renaissance in the five gables .

The four-storey main gable on Parkallee with arcades on the first and second floors and the two-storey mid - gable next to it were destroyed in the Second World War. After the war, a new building with an auditorium and sports hall was built on this area. In the seventies, another extension was realized in the schoolyard, in which u. a. a language laboratory was housed.

The buildings were listed as a cultural monument in Bremen in 1984 .
