On August 23, 1901, the Magistrate of the city of Delmenhorst decided to rename the "Koppelfußweg", on which the Realschule was built, to "Willmsstraße", because Mayor Otto Willms “made a great contribution to the construction of the Realschule built on this path " have.

In addition, the city council decided to expand the organizational structure for the secondary school from 1910 .

From 1922 the city of Delmenhorst tried several times to convert the school into a proper grammar school, the corresponding applications to the responsible ministry in Oldenburg were rejected for financial reasons.

The school building was destroyed in an air raid in 1942 during World War II. However, lessons were offered with shift lessons and hiking classes. The school building was rebuilt in 1950.

In 1952, the city founded a second secondary school, which later became the Max Planck Gymnasium .

In 1956 the high school was renamed the grammar school on Willmsstrasse . The mathematical and natural science branch was reserved for her, while the Max Planck Gymnasium was given a new language focus.
