The Gymnostoma ( Syn .: Quadrangula Baum.-Bod. ) Are a genus of plants in the casuarina family (Casuarinaceae) from the order of the beech-like (Fagales).

description

All Gymnostoma species are evergreen woody plants: trees or large shrubs . Photosynthesis was mainly shifted to the branches, the leaves are greatly reduced. Their rod-like branches are reminiscent of horsetail . The stomata are exposed on the branches. The leaves stand together in whorls of four. The leaf margins are smooth. Stipules are missing.

Gymnostoma species are single- sexed ( monoecious ) or dioecious ( dioecious ). The pollination is carried by the wind. The male are in pure are simple or compound-looking, spiked inflorescences . The female, cone-like inflorescences are on short or long side branches, the appearance of which hardly differs from the vegative branches.

It differs from the other genera of the family mainly through the broad bracts of the cone-shaped fruit clusters, which are lignified between the pair of bracts. The fruits are dry, yellow-brown or grayish wing nuts (Samara). The fruits of neighboring flowers form a fruit cluster, the partial fruits of which, however, are not fused to form a fruit cluster .

Systematics and distribution

This genus was separated from the genus of the casuarina ( Casuarina ) by LAS Johnson (Telopea 2: 83) in 1980 . The generic name is derived from the Greek words gymnos "naked" and stoma "mouth" and refers to the exposed stomata on the branches.

One species ( Gymnostoma australianum ) is in north-eastern Queensland / Australia , all others are native to the Malay Archipelago , the Solomon Islands , Fiji and eight species are native to New Caledonia .
