The Windischgarstner Basin is one of 41 Upper Austrian spatial units and is located in the northern Limestone Alps .

location

The room unit is entirely in the south of the Kirchdorf district .

The area of ​​the spatial unit is around 80 km². The basin is around 19 km long and a maximum of 8 km wide. The minimum width is 2 km. The deepest area is around 570  m above sea level. A. at the mouth of the Pießling . The highest elevation of the area are the slopes of the surrounding mountains at around 1000  m above sea level. A.

The following municipal areas are mostly in the Windischgarstner basin (starting in the north): Edlbach , Roßleithen , Windischgarsten and Spital am Pyhrn .

The spatial unit is surrounded by the following Upper Austrian spatial units (clockwise, starting in the northwest): Kalk-Hochalpen , Steyr- and Teichltal , Salzkammergut-Voralpen , Sengsengebirge and Enns and Steyrtaler Voralpen . The Steyr and Teichltal spatial unit divides this spatial unit into two sub-areas.

Characteristic

  • A basin landscape around Windischgarsten, which is framed by the mountain ranges of the Dead Mountains , Haller Mauern and Sengsengebirge .
  • There are some outstanding hills like Schweizersberg , Radingstein, Gunst.
  • There are many near-natural streams in ditches in the hilly areas, which are lined with gallery forests. Many moors can also be found in the room unit ( Gleinkersee ).
  • The proportion of forest in the Windischgarstner Basin is around 20%. The hills in particular are naturally forested. Spruce - fir - beech mixed forests with yew trees predominate .
  • Agricultural use in basins with grassland management with frequent extensive use . There are still a few orchards and a herbaceous landscape on the Schweizersberg.
  • The localities are mostly in the basin and valley location and are mostly rural settlements . Due to tourism, there are many hotels and second homes.
  • Tourism takes place particularly in winter, two ski areas have their valley stations here (Höß and Wurzeralm ).
  • Important traffic axes ( Pyhrn Autobahn (A 9) and Pyhrnbahn ) cut through the valley. Noise affects the landscape and animal ecology of the habitat.
