Höfen is a south-eastern district of Monschau in the Aachen city region and until 1972 belonged as an independent municipality to the also dissolved district of Monschau and this to the also dissolved administrative district of Aachen (see Aachen Law ).

history

The name is mentioned for the first time in 1361. It goes back to a few individual farms "on the Hoven". Districts are Heidgen and Alzen .

On January 1, 1972, Höfen was incorporated into the city of Monschau.

useful information

The place is on the edge of the Eifel National Park , one of the five national park gates is located in the village . The house-high beech hedges are characteristic of courtyards ; the place is a good documentation example for the Monschau Heckenland . As is typical for the Eifel, Höfen is on the same level. The up to 10 m high hedges protect against the strong winds and thus prevent the house behind it from cooling down in winter. Beech hedges do not lose their withered leaves until spring, with the new growth.

Until 2009, the Federal Intelligence Service at Höfen, Heidgen, operated a wiretapping system with up to 100 employees. The designation Federal Agency for Telecommunications Statistics was used as a camouflage . 2009 began to dismantle the transmission masts.

Worth seeing

Reiner Jakobs in his landscape crib

Every year from the beginning of Advent until the beginning of the following year, the Höfen landscape crib attracts countless visitors from the Rhineland and the neighboring Benelux countries.

An imposing landscape crib with real trees and hundreds of animal specimens (including stuffed deer, foxes, martens and birds of prey) has been set up in the St. Michael parish church in Höfen since the 1980s. Here you can experience the diversity of the Eifel landscape and fauna. The crib is 30 m wide and between 6 and 8 m high. Christmas and folk songs are sung daily by the singing shepherd, the initiator of the crib, Reiner Jakobs. With his performances he collects donations with which he has actively supported children suffering from cancer for years.

Awards

As part of the competition Our village has a future , Höfen received a federal gold medal in 1987 and 2001.
