history

At the 10th General Assembly of the Styrian Forest Association in Cilli, Celje in today's Slovenia , it was decided in 1892 with the President Franz Graf Attems to establish a forestry school for the Austrian Alpine countries. Since the city of Bruck an der Mur provided a building site and part of the city forest especially for this purpose, the decision was made in 1898 for this location. The school was opened on October 3, 1900 as a higher forestry school for the Austrian Alpine countries by the governor of Styria, Edmund Graf Attems . The state of Styria was the school holder. Rudolf Jugoviz became the first director . In 1909 a forester's house Erzherzog Johann was built on the Streblerwiese , which has been preserved and is now used as an official residence. During the First World War , the school building was used as a barracks and a forestry school was set up for war-damaged people. In May and June 1919, during the Carinthian defensive battle , a large number of students took part in the fighting, which is why lessons were discontinued at this time. For the 25th anniversary, the foundation stone for the construction of a student residence was laid and in 1929 the Hubertushof student residence was opened. During the February fighting in 1934, those involved in the Schutzbund occupied the student residence, while those involved in the so-called Schutzkorps of the Patriotic Front occupied the school building, and a firefight broke out. In 1935, under the provisional headmaster Ernst Micke, the school was closed for financial reasons by the state of Styria. In 1938, when Austria was annexed to Hitler's Germany , a Reich Forestry School was reopened with Director Hufnagl. In 1940 Hans Puzyr was appointed director. In the Second World War in 1943, the school was closed and a flak - Regiment moved into the school building. After the war the school was restarted as a state forest ranger school despite major damage. Since the dormitory was used by British soldiers , the boarding students lived in the basement and on the second floor of the school building.

The Lehrforst Lahnhube farm is a listed building

In 1958 the school in Rötz in the municipality of Trofaiach received the teaching forest Lahnhube for independent management, which meant that an area in the high mountains was available for training foresters.

Since 1974 the school has been run in its current form as a higher vocational school . Since 2005 the school has been the only forest ranger school in Austria.
