Radio in Spain

The radio in Spain is an entertainment and information medium.

General

The broadcasting system in Spain is dual: the public broadcasters of Radio Nacional de España (RNE) share the frequency spectrum with many local and some national private broadcasters . However, the listening habits of many Spaniards are fundamentally different from those of German listeners. As in France, a distinction is made primarily between music stations and stations with a high proportion of words, the so-called generalist radios (radios generalistas or cadenas generalistas) .

With the German term “Vollprogramm” this term is only inadequately translated. A large part of the program consists of conversation or call broadcasts. News, background reports and interviews also take up a lot of space. For German listening habits, this may sound dry at times. The fact is, however, that radios generalistas are still the most popular programs. Broadcasting on medium wave continues to play a major role in some regions (this applies in particular to the news channel "Radio 5"), but in most regions the radios generalistas and public broadcasters can now also be received well on FM .

It is also noticeable that the public broadcasters have relatively low audience ratings compared to other countries with a similar broadcasting system.
